Americans have long equated energy security with oil. The country wanted as much as possible because of the havoc an interruption to supply--from wars, disasters and political convulsions--can cause.
In coming years, though, energy security will mean electricity.
An economy dependent on electricity will be different from one dependent on oil. It will require mammoth investment in generation, distribution and transmission. It will challenge regulators and political leaders, as the supply and price of electricity become as politically potent as that of gasoline.

Trump and his tariffs have taken a bull stock market and are on the precipice of turning it into a bear faster than any president has overseen in modern history.
If the stock market closes in bear territory - a drop of 20% from a recent peak - it would be the earliest in a new administration a bull market has turned into a bear in the history of the S&P 500, which dates back to 1957.
The only similar drop for an elected president so quickly into his presidency was under George W. Bush in 2001.
The next largest drop after Bush and Trump was Carter in early 1977.

North Korea is now the world’s most dangerous crypto thief.
It has swiped more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency over the past decade--a sum so large that no one else compares.
The country’s hackers are both patient and brazen, according to investigators. To get into companies' computers, they comb through employees’ Facebook and Instagram pages and invent tailor-made stories to trick them into clicking on links with viruses.
Some North Korean hackers have even become employees themselves, fooling U.S. companies into hiring them as remote IT workers and gaining access to their networks.

Colleges and universities across the country say the visas of some international students have been revoked in recent days without notice, causing confusion on campuses and panic among students, some of whom have filed lawsuits.
At least 300 visas had been revoked, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed last month, adding that the department would continue to identify student visa holders who it felt had abused its parameters.
There are roughly 1.1 million international student visa-holders in the U.S. When international students lose their visas, they are immediately vulnerable to deportation.

In short, the U.S. Treasury market -- a central pillar of the global financial system -- came under heavy selling pressure, sending 10-year borrowing costs surging.
At one-point, 10-year bond yields were set for their biggest weekly jump in more than a decade. Bond yields move inversely to the price. Trading at 4.27% on Thursday, those yields are comfortably below Wednesday's peak of 4.51%. They are also well below the high of almost 5% hit in late 2023 and the double-digit levels seen in the 1980s.

The Sahara Desert is one of Earth's most arid and desolate places, stretching across a swathe of North Africa that spans parts of 11 countries and covers an area comparable to China or the United States. But it has not always been so inhospitable.
During a period from about 14,500 to 5,000 years ago, it was a lush green savannah rich in bodies of water and teeming with life. And, according to DNA obtained from the remains of two individuals who lived about 7,000 years ago in what is now Libya, it was home to a mysterious lineage of people isolated from the outside world.
