China has no right to represent Taiwan, but the island is willing to work with Beijing to combat challenges like climate change, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Thursday, striking both a firm and a conciliatory tone, drawing anger from China.
Lai, who took office in May after being elected in January, is detested by China, which calls him a "separatist". Beijing claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, a view Lai and his government reject.

After the U.S. fight against Islamic State wound down, the Pentagon came up with a recipe for keeping watch over the Middle East while using the bulk of its forces to deal with the greater threats it saw from China and Russia.
And while the Pentagon is hoping that further escalation can be avoided, some military experts say that a substantial American military role will be needed in the region for years to come.
Pentagon officials insist they still plan to hew to their longer--time priority of deterring China--in particular the need to be able to defend Taiwan by 2027, the year that the Central Intelligence Agency says the Chinese leadership has told its military to be ready to invade the island.

Microsoft, Google and Amazon have recently struck deals with operators and developers of nuclear power plants to fuel the boom in data centers, which provide computing services to businesses large and small.
The demand has accelerated because of the big investments these and other tech companies have made in A.I., which requires far more power than more conventional technology businesses like social media, video streaming and web searches.
The Biden administration sees nuclear power, which provides about 20 percent of the nation’s electricity now, as critical to its goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. That’s a change from the past when many Democrats opposed new nuclear plants because of safety, environmental and economic concerns.

Stamatopoulou-Robbins estimates that as many as 67,000 Gazans may have died of starvation since the start of the war, and that over 10,000 more may not have been counted in the death toll because they are still buried in the rubble caused by U.S.-supplied aircraft and bombs.

If budget policies are unchanged, the IMF estimates that large increases in borrowing by the U.S., China and others will drive a rise in government debt to $100 trillion this year, equivalent to roughly 93% of the world's annual production of goods and services. The Fund expects government debt to rise further, and almost match annual world output by the end of the decade.
In an extreme scenario, government debt could hit 115% of global output in 2026, while U.S. government debt could reach 150% of the country's gross domestic product.
