U.S. employment increased less than expected in August, but a drop in the jobless rate to 4.2% suggested the labor market was not falling off the cliff to warrant a half-point interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve this month.
The closely watched employment report from the Labor Department on Friday also showed solid wage growth last month, which should help to support consumer spending and keep the economy out of recession for now. Nonetheless, labor market momentum has slowed, with 86,000 fewer jobs added in June and July than previously reported.

The diminishing availability of water resources across the globe should be considered one of the most pressing environmental security challenges of the century.
That’s the view of one military geography and environmental security specialist, who recently published a study examining the relationship between water scarcity, geopolitics and the potential for violent conflict in a warming world.
“I really hope that I’m wrong,” he added. “But this is my position and certainly the data seems to bear this out.”

The Vienna-based cartel expects demand to grow by 2.03 million barrels a day this year and 1.74 million barrels a day in 2025, from 2.11 million and 1.78 million barrels a day previously. Total demand is estimated to reach 104.2 million barrels a day in 2024 and 106 million the following year.
Demand is still seen at healthy levels?well above the historical average of 1.4 million barrels a day seen before the pandemic?bolstered by strong air travel and road mobility, as well as healthy industrial, construction and agricultural activities in non-OECD countries, OPEC said.

But rent inflation reaccelerated, with shelter costs rising 0.5% in August from July, the second acceleration in as many months. This pushed up "core" inflation to a higher level than forecasters had anticipated.
Core inflation, a measure that excludes volatile prices for food and energy, rose 0.3% in August from July, higher than the 0.2% increase forecasters had anticipated. However, the yearly core inflation rate was in line with expectations at 3.2%. The bureau said the jump in rental costs accounted for most of the increase in core inflation.

The study from the University of Washington, published on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, measured cortical thinning, a process that starts in either late childhood or early adolescence, as the brain begins to prune redundant synapses and shrink its outer layer.
