Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway dumped nearly half of its gigantic Apple stake last quarter in a surprising move for the famously long-term-focused investor.
The Omaha-based conglomerate disclosed in its earnings filing that its holding in the iPhone maker was valued at $84.2 billion at the end of the second quarter, suggesting that the Oracle of Omaha offloaded a little more than 49% of the tech stake. Even after the selling Apple remains the largest stock stake by far for Berkshire.

Japan’s Nikkei Stock Average had its worst day since 1987, falling 12.4% in a frenzy of selling triggered by disappointing economic data in the U.S. and a surge in the Japanese yen.
Other Asian markets also fell, with benchmark indexes in South Korea and Taiwan both down more than 8%. S&P 500 futures fell by more than 2% in Asia as U.S. markets prepared to open the week.

On Wednesday, it changed hands again, in an unusual online auction -- for $8.5 million.
Several large Manhattan office buildings have sold in recent years at steep discounts, some going for less than half of what the previous owners paid, in a market that has yet to hit rock bottom.

A U.N. investigation, ordered after Israel alleged in January that employees of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency participated in the assault, examined the actions of 19 relief workers in all, according to the secretary-general’s office in a statement Monday.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate held $234.6 billion in short-term investments in Treasury bills at the end of the second quarter, while it owned more than $42 billion of cash and cash equivalents that included T-bills with maturities of three months or less, according to its quarterly financial report.
That compared with $195.3 billion in T-bills that the Fed owned as of July 31. The central bank held $4.4 trillion in Treasury securities that include notes, bonds and inflation-linked securities.

The companies racing to build large solar farms across the United States are facing a growing problem: Not enough workers.
Now, they’re turning to robots for help.
On Tuesday, AES Corporation, one of the country’s biggest renewable energy companies, introduced a first-of-its-kind robot that can lug around and install the thousands of heavy panels that typically make up a large solar array. AES said its robot, nicknamed Maximo, would ultimately be able to install solar panels twice as fast as humans can and at half the cost.
