Postings for software development jobs are down more than 30% since February 2020, according to Indeed.com. Industry layoffs have continued this year with tech companies shedding around 137,000 jobs since January, according to Layoffs.fyi.
Company strategies are also shifting. Instead of growth at all costs and investment in moonshot projects, tech firms have become laser focused on revenue-generating products and services.
They have pulled back on entry-level hires, cut recruiting teams and jettisoned projects and jobs in areas that weren’t huge moneymakers, including virtual reality and devices.
At the same time, they started putting enormous resources into AI.

China’s central bank announced a blitz of measures to support the country’s weakening economy and energize its moribund stock market, an unusually broad package that signals growing unease in Beijing after a run of downbeat numbers on jobs, spending and inflation.
At a press conference in Beijing, PBOC Gov. Pan Gongsheng said further easing is in the pipeline, with another reduction in bank reserve requirements expected before year-end.

The U.S. military, including the Marines, is shifting its strategy and expanding its footprint in the Pacific to deter Beijing from launching military action to take over Taiwan--and to prepare to fight if needed.
But one of the most important, and at times overlooked, challenges the military is facing is how to get fuel, ammunition and other equipment to front-line units on remote islands or sea lanes far from main U.S. bases, and protecting those supply lines from Chinese attack.

The number of homeless people in the U.S. continues to grow, putting the country on pace to hit yet another record high this year.
Counts from encampments, streets, and shelters are largely higher than they were in 2023, according to preliminary data collected and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
The numbers come from more than 250 homeless-service organizations covering cities, metro areas and vast rural areas. They are meant to reflect homelessness as it existed on a single night early this year. The Journal’s count includes about 550,000 homeless people so far, up about 10% from what these places reported last year.

U.S. power generation capacity through the end of the decade could rise by about 2.4% to 2.7%, according to an analysis of the most recent available U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) data, from late 2022. Data center power use is expected to more than double by 2030 to consume about 9% of all the country's electricity.
